Juniper berries are the female seed cones produced by various juniper trees. They are not true berries, but rather cones with unusually fleshy texture and fused scales, giving them a berry-like appearance. From a few varieties, particularly juniper (Juniperus communis), the cones are used as a spice, especially in European cuisine, and also give gin its distinctive flavor. Juniper berries are perhaps the only spice derived from coniferous trees.
